Century old farms
In probably no other valley in the Alps there is still today such a multiplicity of century old farms. The old and proud courts, which are often more than 700 years old, hang like eagles' nests on the hillsides, with stunning views over the valley; some are surrounded by blossoming country gardens. All bear witness to the centuries-old tradition of closed farms, stating that the succession may not be divided. They give evidence of the pride of their owners for generations, their traditions and heritage. This fact allows us to experience still today these valuable and well-maintained monuments.

Castle Juval
The Castle Juval rises at the entrance of Val Senales. Since 1983, it is the summer residence of Reinhold Messner, who exhibits several art collections there - an extensive collection of Tibetan art, a mountain image gallery and a collection of masks from five continents. The associated winery "Unterortl" and the organic farm "Oberortl" are also worth a visit. The farm products are served in the restaurant "Schlosswirt". These are all parts of a general concept, aiming for the preservation and revitalization of this small-scale South Tyrolean cultural landscape.
Tip for hikers: Hike along the “Waal-Way” to the castle, visit the farm and enjoy some culinary delights at the inn.
The iceman
The discovery of Oetzi
Dated as being 5,300 years old, the Iceman is the oldest ice mummy ever discovered, and one of the oldest in the world.
Compared to other ancient human remnants, Oetzi is notable for his venerable age, excellent state of preservation and also the tools and items of clothing found nearby. The mummy is the centerpiece of the permanent local history exhibition at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano/Bozen. Temporary exhibitions illustrate the latest research results being carried out on the Iceman.
